At 54,500 square feet, the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute is Nebraska's newest home for state-of-the-art eye care is more than three times larger than before. With three stories and more than 50 exam rooms, you'll be amazed at the changes before you walk in the door. Inside, you'll find clinical space for more than 11 eye-related subspecialties, a new and expanded optical shop, surgical suites and and the Carl Camras Center for Innovative Clinical Trials in Ophthalmology.

Cost: $30 million
Size: A 54,500 square foot building housing clinical and research services. Future plans are to add on a surgical wing.
Building features: Outpatient eye care, a children’s eye care center, clinical research center and regional diagnostic center.
Building’s namesake: Stanley M. Truhlsen, M.D., emeritus professor and former chairman of UNMC’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Dr. Truhlsen is nationally recognized in the field of ophthalmology.
Outpatient Eye Care
Separate clinic areas for specialty care including general ophthalmology and cornea, glaucoma, retina, oculoplastics, and neuro-ophthalmology. Patient-care areas will be closely integrated with the clinical research and diagnostic center to support research studies and also provide state-of-the-art patient care.
Carl Camras Center for Innovative Clinical Trials in Ophthalmology
A dedicated center of excellence for clinical research will enable the department to bring scientific breakthroughs to patients in clinical studies. The research team has expertise in conducting clinical trials that lead to novel therapies for a variety of eye diseases. New therapies developed in the Truhlsen Eye Research Laboratories, in UNMC’s Durham Research Center, will also be brought to patients in clinical trials.
Children’s Eye Care Center
A new center for children’s eye care will provide a subspecialty referral center for pediatric eye care not currently available in our region and provide capacity for clinical research on pediatric eye diseases.
Regional Diagnostic Center
State-of-the-art diagnostic equipment, such as high resolution optical coherence tomography and wide field imaging and angiography, not otherwise available in the community, will be provided for patient care and clinical research.
An optical shop will provide patients convenient access to optical services, products and eyewear.
Eye Surgery Center
Plans are in the works for an eye surgery center to be built at a future date.
In 2013, the new Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute will open, giving Nebraska a state-of-the-art facility designed to transform ophthalmology for generations to come. The UNMC Physicians Eye Specialties clinic at 40th and Dewey Ave. will relocate all of its operations to take advantage of the wonderful new facilities.
